Privacy policy · last updated 26 October 2026
Your words, handled with care.
- You don’t need an account, and we don’t ask for your name or email.
- When you make a voice note, your recording and words are sent to our AI provider to tidy, translate and voice them. We don’t store your recordings or messages on our server.
- Your favourites, the contacts you pick and your settings stay on your iPhone. We never see or upload your address book.
- We don’t sell your data, show ads or track you across apps.
Who is responsible
Franca is provided by Ian Atkinson, an individual based in Luxembourg, trading as Franca (“we”, “us”). Postal address for correspondence: Unit 174986, PO Box 7169, Poole BH15 9EL, United Kingdom. We are responsible for your personal data under the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Contact: privacy@getfranca.app.
What we collect and why
- Your recordings and text. When you record or type a message, it is sent through our server to OpenAI to turn your voice into text, tidy or translate it, and turn it into a voice note. The finished voice note comes back to your iPhone. Our server passes it on and does not store it. Why: to give you the feature you asked for.
- Your style examples. Your last 5 sent messages are kept on your iPhone and are sent with your next tidying request as examples of your style. Turn this off with Forget my style in Settings.
- A random app ID. A random app ID is made when you install Franca. It is used to count your free messages and stop abuse, and is kept 180 days from first use. It is not linked to your name, phone number or Apple ID. For security we also briefly rate-limit by IP address (kept up to 2 days). Why: to run the free messages fairly and keep the service safe.
- If you write to us. When you use the contact form on our website, we receive your name, email, company (if you give it) and message by email, sent through Resend, our email provider. If you email us, we receive your email. Why: to answer you.
- Technical logs. Our host, Vercel, keeps short-lived request logs, including IP address, for security. Why: to keep the service safe.
What stays on your iPhone
- Contacts. When you choose a contact with Apple’s contact picker, Franca receives only that contact’s name and the number or email you pick. It is kept on your iPhone for your favourites. We never see or upload your address book.
- Favourites and settings, including the names, numbers and apps of the people you send to, and your last 5 sent messages. These stay on your iPhone. Deleting the app deletes them.
- Recordings waiting to send. A recording is kept on your iPhone until it is sent, so you can retry. A voice note you share into Franca waits in the app until Franca opens it, then is deleted.
- Microphone. Franca uses the microphone only while you are recording a message. The words you see while you talk come from Apple’s speech recognition, which may be processed by Apple.
AI providers
Before Franca sends anything to an AI provider, it asks for your permission once. You can withdraw it at any time in Settings, which stops the AI features.
- OpenAI turns speech into text, tidies and translates it, and makes the voice note. Under OpenAI’s API terms, OpenAI does not train on this data by default and may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse (OpenAI’s API data commitments). OpenAI is in the United States.
Who else receives data
Our host, Vercel, runs our server, Upstash stores the free-message count, and Resend delivers contact-form messages to us. OpenAI, Vercel, Upstash and Resend may process data in the United States; we rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or Standard Contractual Clauses. We may disclose data where the law requires it.
Legal basis
We process your messages to provide the service you ask for (contract). Sending them to our AI provider is based on your permission, which you can withdraw in Settings; withdrawing does not affect earlier processing. We keep the random app ID, the short IP rate limit and security logs for our legitimate interest in running the service safely and fairly. We answer messages you send us because you asked us to.
If you share a voice note from someone else, only share it if you are allowed to, and only so you can understand it.
How long we keep it
- Recordings, text and voice notes: not stored on our server. OpenAI may keep them for up to 30 days.
- Random app ID and free-message count: 180 days from first use, stored with Upstash.
- IP rate limit: up to 2 days.
- Security logs: kept by our host, Vercel, for up to 30 days.
- Messages you send us: kept as long as needed to answer you, and no longer than 2 years.
How to delete your data
Delete the app to remove everything stored on your iPhone, including favourites and settings. Free-message counts on our server are deleted automatically 180 days from first use. To delete your free-message count before 180 days, email privacy@getfranca.app before deleting the app; we will tell you how to find your app ID.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, to receive it in a portable form, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to withdraw consent at any time. Email privacy@getfranca.app and we will reply within one month. You can also complain to the Luxembourg data protection authority (CNPD, cnpd.public.lu) or the authority where you live.
Children
Franca is not meant for anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change affects what we collect, the app will tell you before it applies.
